Colitis, light micrograph

Colitis. Light micrograph of a section through colon (large intestine) tissue affected by bacterial infection, causing injury to the mucosal lining, which has resulted in inflammation (colitis). This is characterised here as an excessive production of mucin, fibrin protein and leucocytes (white blood cells). This condition is called pseudomembranous colitis and it arises from infection by Clostridium difficile, which produces toxins that destroy the surface epithelium. It causes diarrhoea, dehydration due to loss of fluid absorption, and may be fatal. Magnification: x13 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library provides a detailed look at colitis, a condition characterized by inflammation in the colon due to bacterial infection. The image showcases a section of colon tissue affected by pseudomembranous colitis, caused by Clostridium difficile infection. The harmful toxins produced by this bacterium destroy the surface epithelium, leading to various distressing symptoms such as diarrhea and dehydration. The magnified view reveals an excessive production of mucin, fibrin protein, and white blood cells (leucocytes), highlighting the body's response to combat the infection. This histological examination sheds light on the damaging effects of bacteria on our biological systems. The swollen and inflamed lining of the large intestine is clearly visible in this stained micrograph. It serves as a reminder of how infections can disrupt normal bodily functions and cause significant harm if left untreated. Gastroenterologists studying gastrointestinal disorders will find immense value in this image for its insights into colitis pathology. Additionally, researchers exploring cell biology and cytology will appreciate this visual representation showcasing abnormal cellular accumulation associated with bacterial infections. Science Photo Library continues to provide invaluable resources like these that bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding.
