Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria on tonsil

Streptococcus bacteria. Colourtransmission electron micrograph of a chain of Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria attached tohuman tonsils. Typically forming chains of cells, Streptococcus bacteria are rounded orspherical Gram-positive cocci. Surrounding thecells is the capsule forming a loose slime layer(blue). The two cells at bottom are dividing bybinary fission to produce two new daughter cells.Healthy humans carry these bacteria harmlessly intheir throat or nose. Pathogenic strains of S. pyogenes, however, cause sore throats, tonsillitis, scarlet fever and wound infections.Magnification x35, 000 at 6x7cm size.Magnification: x120, 000 at 10x8 inch print size

Staphylococcus aureus bacteria

Staphylococcus aureus. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. These Gram-positive bacteria cause skin infections and often grow in grape-like clusters of small spheres (cocci). S. aureus is extremely common in humans, living harmlessly on the skin and inside the nose, throat and large intestine. If S. aureus multiplies inside blocked pores in the skin, it causes pus to build up forming an acne spot or a boil. Inside the body this bacteria may also cause abscesses and most types of suppurative infection. Treatment is with antibiotics if the infection is serious. Magnification: x11, 200 at 6x4.5cm size. False-colour TEM of bacterium E.Coli

False colour transmission electron micrograph of the bacterium Escherichia coli, a normal member of human intestinal flora. Under certain conditions it may become harmful causing an infection in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. The micrograph shows the bacterium dividing (binary fission), a pinching in process which divides the cell into 2 daughter cells. The green mass (centre of cells) highlights the nucleic acid (DNA), the genetic information, which lies unbound by a membrane in the bacterial cytoplasm. As experimental laboratory organisms, E.coli have supplied scientists with most of the genetic information available today. Mag: X17,650 (at 35mm size)
