EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Rodrigo Zamorano, a renowned Spanish author, translator, and cosmographer from the 16th to 17th century. The oval-shaped portrait features Zamorano's profile with a circular inscription in Latin stating that he is in his 39th year. This significant period marked the publication of his notable work "Compendio de la arte de navegar" (1581), an influential compendium on the art of navigation. The top section of the image displays various symbols related to navigation, emphasizing Zamorano's expertise in this field. His contributions were so remarkable that English mathematician and cartographer Edward Wright later translated his work into English as "Certaine Errors in Navigation" (1599). Zamorano served at the Spanish court during King Philip II's reign, further highlighting his significance within historical contexts. Besides his navigational expertise, he also translated Euclid's Elements into Spanish in 1576. Todd-White Art Photography beautifully captures this historic figure against a decorated border, surrounded by globes and astrolabes - essential tools for astronomers and navigators during that era. This print not only pays homage to Rodrigo Zamorano but also serves as a visual representation of an important chapter in history where scientific knowledge intersected with exploration and discovery.
