William Earl Johns (5 February 1893 21 June 1968) was an English pilot and writer of adventure stories, usually written under the pen name Captain W. E. Johns. Full length portrait photograph of Dr Jonathan Couch (1789-1870) standing with one hand hooked into his waistcoat and holding a top hat in the other. Couch was born in Polperro and, after qualifying as a medical doctor, returned to his birthplace in 1810. He was a keen local historian, naturalist and published author whose interests and works included zoology, botany, geology, ichthyology, archaeology and Cornish folklore. Photographer: Unknown

1881 Charles Robert Darwin ( 12 February 1809 - 19 April 1882) English Naturalist and author of the Origin of Species. 1922 Hand coloured portrait aquatint of Darwin by G. Sidney Hunt after the 1881 painting by John Collier. Collier's portrait is mentioned in his son Francis Darwin's "Life and Letter of Charles Darwin" as follows "Many of those who knew (Darwin's) face most intimately think that Mr. Collier's picture is the best of the portraits". Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection stands as one of the greatest and most controversial ideas of science. It is the basis of life sciences today
