Mendeleyevs periodic table, 1869 Featured Print

Mendeleyevs periodic table, 1869

Mendeleyev's periodic table, 1869. Mendeleyev's periodic table of 1869. This is the first version of the periodic table drawn up by the Russian chemist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev (1834-1907). He left gaps in the table for new elements, that were indeed later discovered, vindicating his theory. This version has the elements listed using chemical symbols, and ordered by atomic weight, but the fully correct chemical arrangement has not yet emerged. The final version (1871) had the elements arranged in the familiar vertical columns or groups. This version is dated (lower left) to 17 February 1869, and Mendeleyev's name is at top. This manuscript is from the Mendeleyev museum. Photographed in St Petersburg, Russia. See also H413/297

HMS Beagle Ship laid up Darwins Voyage

"Beagle laid ashore, River Santa Cruz". Copperplate engraving, art by Conrad Martens, engraved by T. Landseer. Published by H. Colburn 1838. Plate from The Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of HMS Adventure and Beagle'. The Beagle was grounded for repairs on the 16th April 1834 to repair damage caused by a rock at Port Desire and to check the copper sheets were in tact (Fitzroy notes they were about to enter the Pacific where worms soon eat their way through unprotected planks). They found that a piece of the false keel had been knocked off and the copper was heavily rubbed in places. The carpenter Mr. May repaired it all in one tide. The Beagle undertook a repainting and refit while Fitzroy, Darwin and a small crew explored several days upriver

1863 Huxley from Ape to Man evolution

Ordered series of primate skeletons. The Frontis engraving by Waterhouse Hawkins from the first edition of Huxley's 1863 "Evidences as to Man's Place in Nature". In this book Huxley presented his evidence that man was descended from the apes. It was published in reaction to Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" 1859. Though this image is often interpreted as indicating a line of descent, it is more intended to show ordered variation in limb bones and posture as well as the clear skeletal similarities in the group. The image has been quoted as an inspiration for Rudolph Zalinger's famous Time-Life 1965 image "The Road to Homo Sapiens" (page 40-45, Nature Library Early Man). That iconic image has become known as "The March of Progress". The artist for this work, Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, was famous for his pioneering dinosaur reconstructions but lectured against Darwinian evolution
