Paul Broca, French anatomist
Paul Broca (1824-1880), French anatomist. This bronze statue was inaugurated on 26 July 1887, on the Boulevard Saint Germain, Paris, France. The sculptor, Paul-Francois Choppin (1856-1937), has shown Broca taking measurements of a human skull. This refers to Brocas work in anthropology, where his methods allowed comparison of prehistoric and modern humans, supporting Darwins theories of evolution. This statue was one of several taken down during World War II to recycle the metals, and has not been replaced. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the bronze statue of Paul Broca, a renowned French anatomist. Erected in Paris, France on 26 July 1887, this monument was crafted by the talented sculptor Paul-Francois Choppin. The statue depicts Broca engrossed in his work, meticulously measuring a human skull—an emblematic representation of his significant contributions to anthropology. Broca's pioneering methods revolutionized the field of anthropology by enabling comparisons between prehistoric and modern humans. His findings provided substantial support for Charles Darwin's evolutionary theories. This remarkable artwork stood as a testament to Broca's groundbreaking research until World War II when it was dismantled and recycled due to metal shortages during the war effort. Unfortunately, this extraordinary sculpture has not been replaced since its removal over eight decades ago. However, through this mesmerizing photograph from La Science Illustree—a popular science weekly published in France—we can still admire and appreciate the historical significance of this lost statue. Paul Broca's legacy as a scientist and physician continues to inspire generations with his profound understanding of anatomy and anthropological studies. This monochromatic image captures the essence of his dedication and expertise while serving as a poignant reminder of his invaluable contributions to our understanding of human evolution.
