Oil well, 19th century

Oil well. Crude oil erupting from a wellhead in a 19th-century oil field. The wellhead is the structure used to contain and pump oil as it reaches the surface from deep underground, often, as here, under great pressure. This oil well is in the Balakhani oilfield in Baku, Azerbaijan, then under Russian rule. Oil had been produced in this region since at least the 16th century. The first modern oil wells here were drilled in the 1840s. The oil industry here expanded over the following decades, with large amounts of oil still being obtained here today. Chappe and the Transit of Venus, 1761 Featured Image

Chappe and the Transit of Venus, 1761

Chappe and the Transit of Venus, 1761. Historical artwork of the French astronomer Jean-Baptiste Chappe d'Auteroche (left, 1722-1769) in Tobolsk, Siberia, Russia, during his expedition to observe the transit of Venus on 6 June 1761. This scene depicts a large electrical storm. The local inhabitants thought Chappe was a magician, responsible for causing the bad weather with his observations. Transits by Venus across the Sun are rare, and Chappe travelled to Mexico to observe the following one in 1769, dying there of yellow fever. Artwork from the second volume (second period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

Refraction demonstration, 1893 Featured Image

Refraction demonstration, 1893

Refraction demonstration. 19th-century artwork of a demonstration of the principles of radiation and refraction. A beam of sunlight is passing through two holes in a sheet of card. One beam is passing through the air to strike the lower piece of card. The other beam is passing through water, and being refracted (bent). This also splits the light into its component colours, producing a partial solar spectrum. Artwork from the 12th volume (second period of 1893) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree
