This print showcases Ismail I, Shah of Persia, a prominent historical figure who left an indelible mark on Iran's history. Ismail I, also known as Sophy I, ruled from 1501 to 1524 and played a pivotal role in unifying the region while establishing the influential Safavid Persian dynasty. This woodcut portrait is part of Andre Thevet's renowned work "Cosmographie universelle" published in 1575. The image portrays Ismail with his regal turban and a distinct profile that highlights his features. Interestingly, despite being of Pontic Greek descent, he possessed reddish-blond hair—a unique characteristic for an Iranian leader. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this historic artwork from Chapter XVI of Book IX within "Cosmographie universelle". The book itself delves into the rich history and geography of lands explored by Thevet during his travels. This print invites us to delve into the medieval world where Ismail reigned as an imperial ruler and founder of Islam in Persia. It serves as a reminder of the significant contributions made by individuals like him who shaped Middle Eastern politics and culture during the 16th century.
