Bhupinder Singh, Maharajah of Patiala playing cricket

Maharajah Bhupinder Singh of Patiala (1891 - 1938) playing cricket. Perhaps best known for his extravagance, the Maharajah nevertheless worked for the betterment of social conditions within his kingdom. He was also a great patron of the sports and a first class cricketer. He captained the Indian cricket team who travelled to England in 1911 and played as a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club. Date: 1909

James 1st Duke of Monmouth

James 1st Duke of Monmouth (1649-1685). James was the illegitimate son of Charles II, fought for the British in the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-1674), and was beheaded in 1685 after a failed attempt to depose James II, in what was called the Monmouth Rebellion. Illustration by Sir Peter Lely
