EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th-century artwork captures a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Indian and Chinese people during this era. The print, taken from Jean Mocquet's renowned book "Voyages en Afrique, Asie, Indes orientales et occidentales" showcases the diverse cultural practices of these two distinct communities. In the top portion of the engraving, we witness Indians and Canarins engaged in coconut harvesting. These skilled individuals are diligently gathering coconuts from towering trees, showcasing their deep connection with nature and their expertise in agricultural practices. Meanwhile, at the bottom section of the image, Chinese individuals are depicted enjoying food and making music. This portrayal highlights their love for culinary delights as well as their passion for artistic expression through music. The monochrome illustration beautifully captures various aspects of life including work, entertainment, religion (as seen by Christian references), and indigenous customs prevalent during that time period. It serves as a valuable anthropological artifact shedding light on ethnic diversity and historical interactions between different cultures. Todd-White Art Photography has skillfully preserved this remarkable piece of history through their photo print.
