Sydney Cove, Australia, circa 1790

Sydney Cove. Historical artwork showing Sydney Cove, Australia, circa 1790, a few years after the founding of Sydney, which would become the largest city in Australia. This settlement was founded in 1788 by the British admiral and colonial administrator Arthur Phillip (1738-1814). Phillip arrived in a fleet of 11 ships with around 1400 crew and convicts. Although the settlers faced hardships, the colony was successfully established over the following four years. At bottom, settlers are seen meeting with local aboriginals, who were ravaged by a smallpox outbreak in 1789. This is a German engraving from around the middle of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork captures the essence of Sydney Cove, Australia, circa 1790, just a few years after its founding. The image showcases the determination and resilience of the British settlers who arrived in 1788 under the leadership of Admiral Arthur Phillip. Despite facing numerous hardships, this colony successfully established itself over the next four years. In this print, we witness a significant moment as settlers gather with local aboriginals at the bottom of the frame. These indigenous people had been ravaged by a smallpox outbreak in 1789, highlighting both their tragic history and their interaction with European colonizers. The German engraving from around the mid-19th century beautifully depicts this coastal settlement's landscape. We see houses and buildings dotting Sydney Cove's bay area while ships anchor offshore in Port Jackson. The monochrome illustration adds an air of authenticity to this glimpse into Australia's past. As we delve into this scene frozen in time, it becomes evident that these early pioneers played a crucial role in shaping what would eventually become Australia's largest city. Their efforts laid down strong foundations for future generations to build upon and thrive within New South Wales' capital. This remarkable artwork serves as a testament to human exploration and colonization during an era when cultures collided on distant shores. It invites us to reflect upon our shared history while acknowledging both triumphs and tragedies along the way.
