Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
Methanospirillum hungatii bacteria
Archaebacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of the archaebacteria Methanospirillum hungatii. An elongated Gram-negative cell, it is here undergoing cell division. Typically, these thin cells are spiral shaped. Two other cells are cut through in cross-section. Methanospirillum hungatii is an anaerobe living in oxygen-free conditions. It is a methanogen in that it metabolizes carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce methane. Like all bacteria, archaebacteria are single celled prokaryotes without a nucleus. Archaebacteia, however, have very primitive ancestors not closely related to other bacteria. Magnification: x29, 000 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x100, 000 at 8x10 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Methanospirillum hungatii bacteria, a fascinating member of the archaebacteria group. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph, we witness an extraordinary moment as the elongated Gram-negative cell undergoes cell division. The thin spiral-shaped cells are characteristic of this species. Interestingly, two other cells can be observed in cross-section. Methanospirillum hungatii thrives in oxygen-free environments as an anaerobe. It possesses the unique ability to metabolize carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce methane, making it a remarkable methanogen. As with all bacteria, these archaebacteria are single-celled prokaryotes lacking a nucleus. However, what sets them apart is their ancient lineage that diverges significantly from other bacterial ancestors. The magnification power used for this image allows us to appreciate its intricate details: x29,000 at 6x7cm size or x100,000 at 8x10 inch size. This stunning visual representation offers valuable insights into the world of microbial life and bacteriology.
