Skin tissue, light micrograph

Skin tissue. Light micrograph of a transverse section through human skin. The skin is made up of an outer epidermis (pale purple, across top) with hair follicles (deep purple). These produce hair from a bulbous root (below epidermis). The hairs have an erector muscle and sebaceous glands around this base. Sweat glands (pink) are found lower down in the next skin layer, the dermis. The dermis consists of collagen and elastic fibres and a fat layer at its base. Blood vessels in the dermis form capillary loops under the epidermis. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of human skin tissue, as seen through a light micrograph. The transverse section reveals the various layers and components that make up our skin, highlighting its complexity and importance in maintaining our overall health. At the top, we can observe the outer epidermis, depicted in a pale purple hue. This layer is responsible for protecting us from external factors and houses hair follicles that appear deep purple in color. These follicles play a crucial role in producing hair from their bulbous roots located just below the epidermis. The hairs themselves are equipped with an erector muscle and surrounded by sebaceous glands at their base. Moving further down into the next layer known as the dermis, we encounter sweat glands represented by pink structures. They contribute to regulating body temperature by secreting perspiration onto our skin's surface. Composed of collagen and elastic fibers, the dermis also contains a fat layer at its base which provides insulation and support to this vital organ. Additionally, blood vessels within this layer form capillary loops beneath the epidermis, ensuring proper circulation throughout. This remarkable image offers valuable insights into both normal anatomy and histology of human skin tissue. It serves as a reminder of how intricately designed our bodies are on a microscopic level while emphasizing the significance of maintaining healthy skin for optimal well-being.
