Culex mosquito, SEM

Culex mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Culex sp. mosquito. The mosquito's head is dominated by its large compound eyes (brown spheres). Sprouting from between its eyes are the antennae, which are sensory organs covered in fine hairs. The long thin proboscis protruding from the bottom of the head is used for feeding. Only female mosquitoes feed on blood. Mosquitoes have six long jointed legs. Several Culex species are vectors for human diseases, including West Nile virus and Japanese encephalitis

Bugandan Royalty (card 1 of 2) Featured Image

Bugandan Royalty (card 1 of 2)

Card 1 of 2. The young King Daudi Cwa II of Uganda, seated on his elaborate golden throne (topped with a very British crown!), holding a staff of office, with his feet on a cheetah skin. Sir Daudi Cwa II, KCMG, KBE (1896 - 1939) was the King (kabaka) of Buganda from 1897 to 1939. On 14 August 1897, he succeeded Mwanga II as king of Buganda, a state in East Africa, which is now part of Uganda. A reformist, he initiated several significant changes in his kingdom, including a process of democratisation. After his death in 1939, he was succeeded by his son, Mutesa II, who went on to become the first president of Uganda. Daudi Cwa was baptized as a Protestant. "Daudi" is the Buganda language equivalent to "David"

Eyelash mite tails, SEM

Eyelash mite tails. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tails (pink) of three eyelash, or follicle, mites (Demodex folliculorum), protruding from a human hair follicle. The hair shaft (upper right) is also seen. These harmless parasites infest follicles (depressions in the skin which contain the roots of hairs) around the eyelids, nose and in the ear canals of humans. One follicle may contain up to 25 growing mites. They feed on oily secretions from the skin's sebaceous glands, as well as dead skin cells. Infestation is usually symptomless, but, in some individuals, allergic reactions to the mites can cause hair loss and acne. Magnification: x250 at 6x7cm size
