Pink nodules of Rhizobium leguminosarum

Macrophotograph of pink nodules of the nitrogen- fixing bacteria Rhizobium leguminosarum on the roots of a pea plant (Pisum sativum). The nodules are the sites where the bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into an organic form which is used by the plant in the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. The bacteria live freely in the soil, and will accumulate around fine root hairs, probably in response to some attractant exuded by the root. The nodule is pink because of the presence of haemoglobin, whose function is uncertain but is known to be necessary to nitrogen fixation. Magnification: X 1 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This macrophotograph showcases the delicate beauty of pink nodules formed by the nitrogen-fixing bacteria, Rhizobium leguminosarum, on the roots of a vibrant pea plant. These nodules serve as crucial sites where atmospheric nitrogen is transformed into an organic form that fuels the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids within the plant. Intriguingly, these beneficial bacteria exist freely in the soil but are drawn to accumulate around fine root hairs, likely due to some attractant secreted by the root itself. The presence of haemoglobin gives these nodules their enchanting pink hue, although its precise role in nitrogen fixation remains uncertain. At a magnification of X 1 at 35mm size, this microphotograph provides us with a unique glimpse into the intricate relationship between plants and microbes. It highlights nature's remarkable ability to harness symbiosis for mutual benefit – while providing essential nutrients for growth and development, Rhizobium leguminosarum finds refuge and sustenance within Pisum sativum's roots. This image not only celebrates the wonders of bacteriology and microbiology but also emphasizes how microscopic organisms play vital roles in our ecosystem. As we marvel at this stunning print from Science Photo Library, let it remind us of nature's intricate web of life that extends far beyond what meets our eyes.
