EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of John Colet, an influential figure in English history. John Colet, born in London in 1467, was not only a renowned humanist but also a reformer who sought to bring positive change to Christianity during the 16th century. Educated at St. Anthony's School and Magdalene College, Oxford, Colet furthered his studies in France and Italy before returning to England. Ordained as a clergyman, he eventually became the Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in 1505. Colet's dedication to education led him to establish St. Paul's School using his inheritance after his father passed away. His vision went beyond traditional teachings; he aimed to bridge the gap between classical knowledge and Christian doctrine. While never intending to break away from the Church of Rome completely, Colet challenged certain practices such as auricular confession and celibacy among clergy members. As one of the early Christian humanists, John Colet left an indelible mark on future theologians with his unique approach that combined classical wisdom with religious teachings. This remarkable engraving by Todd-White Art Photography beautifully encapsulates the spirit of this visionary reformer whose ideas continue to inspire generations even today.
