Skull anatomy by Leonardo da Vinci

Skull anatomy by Leonardo da Vinci. Historical artwork and notes on the anatomy of the human skull and teeth, by the Italian artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). This bisected skull shows the external structure (right), and dissected facial sinuses (left), the air-filled spaces inside the bones of the face. The diagram at lower left shows the teeth present in one half of the mouth: 4 incisors, 2 canines, 4 pre-molars, and 6 molars. Da Vinci was the first anatomist known to have correctly noted the number and root structure of human teeth. The notes are an example of his mirror writing, which was written backwards from right to left, and could be read in a mirror

Nicolaus Copernicus, Polish astronomer

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) observing a lunar eclipse in Rome, Italy, in 1500. Copernicus was a Polish astronomer who studied in both Poland and Italy. Later, he began the revolution that overthrew more than 1000 years of astronomical thought. Since the time of Ptolemy in the second century AD, the Earth had been considered to be the immovable centre of the universe. From 1512, Copernicus developed his heliocentric theory, where the Earth was one of several planets moving around the Sun. Copernicus feared persecution by the Roman Catholic Church, and delayed publication of his book, The Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres, until he was near death. He received his copy from the printers on the day he died. The book was banned by the Roman Catholic church from 1616 until 1835. Engraving from the 1875 edition of Vies des Savants Illustres

Feast from Book of Esther, 1430 artwork

Feast from Book of Esther. Illuminated manuscript miniature from the 15th-century Alba Bible, depicting the feast given by Queen Vashti and King Ahasuerus of Persia (The Book of Esther). Vashti was banished and a Jewish girl Esther succeeded her as Queen of Persia. The Alba Bible, completed in 1430, is a translation of the Old Testament from Hebrew into Medieval Castilian. It was commissioned in 1422. The 513 pages are illustrated with 334 miniatures, produced by members of the Franciscan Order in Toledo. The original is displayed in Madrid, Spain. 500 facsimile editions were produced in 1992
