British First Airborne dug in at Arnhem; Second World War, 1

Photograph showing a unit of the British First Airborne Division, in shallow trenches along a road side near Arnhem, September 1944. On 17th September 1944 Operation Market Garden was put into action; a bold plan devised by Field-Marshal Montgomery to drop thousands of airborne troops into Holland to capture an invasion route into Germany. The British First Airborne, American 81st and 101st Divisions took part in the plan, which was ultimately unsuccessful

Delta mission to the ISS, artwork

Delta mission to the International Space Station (ISS) over the Netherlands, artwork. This mission (April 2004) included Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers and a variety of European science experiments. The Expedition 8 crew (Alexandr Kaleri and Michael Foale) were replaced with the Expedition 9 crew (Edward Fincke and Gennady Padalka). The Soyuz spacecraft (one at lower left) were Soyuz TMA-4 and Soyuz TMA-3. The ISS, built in stages since 1998, is a collaborative project between the national space agencies of the USA, Canada, Japan, Russia and Europe. It orbits at an altitude of around 360 kilometres
