Heart and lung disease, X-rays C018 / 0502
Heart and lung disease. Coloured X-ray (top left) and computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest of an 80 year old patient with heart and lung disease. The patient is a former miner and has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and an enlarged left ventricle (at centre right) of the heart. COPD is a collection of diseases that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Damage to the lung tissue (seen as opaque plaques) reduces gas exchange in the lungs. The heart has to pump harder to get oxygen to the body. As it is a muscle, the heart grows if it has an increased work load. A pacemaker (upper right of X-ray) has also been fitted, to supply electrical impulses to the heart to keep it beating regularly

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of heart and lung disease in an 80-year-old patient. The image features a combination of coloured X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scans, providing a comprehensive view of the patient's chest. The individual depicted in this image is a former miner who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which encompasses conditions like emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The detrimental effects on lung tissue are evident through opaque plaques, reducing gas exchange within the lungs. Consequently, the heart must work harder to supply oxygen to the body. At the center-right of the image, we observe an enlarged left ventricle – a consequence of increased workload on the heart muscle due to COPD. To support regular heartbeat patterns, an implanted pacemaker can be seen at the upper right corner of the X-ray. This photograph not only highlights specific medical conditions but also sheds light on occupational diseases that miners may face throughout their lives. It serves as a diagnostic tool for healthcare professionals specializing in cardiology and respiratory disorders. Through this striking visual representation, viewers gain insight into how heart and lung diseases impact individuals as they age. This thought-provoking image encourages further research and understanding in order to develop effective treatments for these debilitating conditions.
