Feudal mine, 15th century
Feudal mine. 15th-century artwork of quarrels and disputes among the workers at a mine in the Harz mountains of what is now Germany. The mine is part of the feudal system by which land was owned and managed in that period. The feudal castle is at top left, with the feudal overlord, or chatelain, and his wife (the chatelaine) at lower right. Mining in the Harz mountains has a long history, with the area being famed for its historic silver mines. Lead and copper were also mined here. Artwork from the third edition of Les Entrailles de la Terre (1902) by French author Eugene Caustier

This print captures a vivid scene from the 15th century, showcasing the tumultuous atmosphere of a feudal mine in the Harz mountains of Germany. The artwork portrays quarrels and disputes among hardworking miners, shedding light on the challenges they faced within the feudal system that governed land ownership during that era. At the top left corner stands an imposing feudal castle, symbolizing authority and power.
