Brain glial cells, light micrograph C016 / 0524

Brain glial cells. Light micrograph of a section through brain tissue, showing numerous glial cells (dark). Glial cells, or neuroglia, are non-neural cells of the central nervous system (CNS, brain and spinal cord). They are the predominant cell type in brain tissue and are thought to outnumber neurons by 10 to 1. Their precise roles remain to be well understood. Glial cells provide physical and functional support to neurons and participate in maintenance of the blood-brain barrier by attachments to blood vessels (as seen here). Their star-shaped appearance means this type of glial cell are known as astrocytes. Magnification: x180, when printed 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of brain glial cells, offering a glimpse into the complex inner workings of our central nervous system. The image, captured using a light microscope, reveals a section through brain tissue and highlights the abundance of dark glial cells dispersed throughout. These non-neural cells, known as astrocytes due to their star-shaped appearance, play an essential role in supporting and maintaining the health of neurons. With their precise functions still not fully understood, glial cells are believed to outnumber neurons by an astonishing 10 to 1 in brain tissue. In this particular micrograph, we can observe these supportive cells forming attachments to blood vessels, contributing to the maintenance of the crucial blood-brain barrier. The magnification used for this print allows us to appreciate the fine details and structures within these glial cells. Their stained appearance provides contrast against healthy surrounding tissues while emphasizing their significance in neurological processes. This remarkable image serves as a reminder that there is still much more to uncover about the complexities of our own brains. It invites us to marvel at the beauty and intricacy found within even seemingly ordinary cellular components like glial cells – reminding us that every aspect of our anatomy holds its own fascinating story waiting to be unraveled.
