Blood clot
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a blood clot. Red blood cells have been trapped by a web of thin yellow-white strands of fibrin. Fibrin is an insoluble protein and represents a mutation of a soluble protein called fibrinogen normally present in blood. Blood clots may occur on the surface of skin in case of injuries or inside blood vessels, where they are known as thrombi. In the later case they may lead to heart attacks. Magnification: x1830 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a blood clot, captured through a scanning electron microscope. The false-color image reveals a network of delicate yellow-white fibrin strands that ensnare vibrant red blood cells. Fibrin, an insoluble protein formed from its soluble counterpart fibrinogen, is responsible for this mutation and plays a crucial role in the clotting process. Blood clots can occur both on the surface of the skin due to injuries or inside blood vessels where they are known as thrombi. In more severe cases, these internal clots can lead to heart attacks. This magnified image at x1830 highlights the complexity and fragility of our circulatory system. The microscopic photograph not only sheds light on the anatomy and mechanism behind clot formation but also serves as a reminder of our body's incredible ability to heal itself. Haematology enthusiasts and medical professionals alike will appreciate this striking visual representation of coagulation in action. Displayed by Science Photo Library, renowned for their exceptional scientific imagery, this print offers viewers an opportunity to delve into subjects such as injury processes, human anatomy, circulation systems, and more. It is truly an awe-inspiring glimpse into one aspect of our complex biological makeup – reminding us just how remarkable our bodies truly are.
