Blood coagulation cascade. Artwork of the biochemical cascade of blood chemicals and proteins during blood clotting (coagulation). The blood vessel and its layered wall is at upper left. The main diagram shows a clot forming at the damaged area (upper right). This occurs via reaction chains known as pathways mediated by factor X proteins (red spheres). The extrinsic pathway (down centre, blue arrows) and intrinsic pathway (down left, yellow arrows) unite in the common pathway (up right, from thrombin, yellow sphere) to form the blood clot. This consists of fibrin (yellow trefoils), platelets (pink puzzle pieces), red blood cells (red discs), and white blood cells (light blue spheres)

Cardiac muscle. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of cardiac muscle fibrils (purple)from a healthy heart. Mitochondria (green) supply the muscle cells with energy. The muscle fibrils, or myofibrils, are crossed by transverse tubules (dark purple lines). These tubules mark the division of the myofibrils into contractile units (sarcomeres). The central structure is a capillary (orange) seen in cross-section, with a bi-concave red blood cell (red) passing along it. Cardiac muscle is under subconscious control and continuously contracts to pump blood around the body without tiring. Magnification: 3600x when printed 10 centimetres across

Red blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of red blood cells in rouleau formation. They often stack together in this way because of their shape. Red blood cells are the most abundant type of cell in human blood, accounting for 40% of blood volume. Each cubic millimetre of blood contains around five million of these flexible disc-shaped cells. The red colour comes from the protein haemoglobin, which picks up oxygen in the lungs and distributes it around the body. Because the cells have no nucleus and are subjected to constant physical pounding, they last only four months before being destroyed & broken down. Magnification: x3000 at 5x7cm size
