Ebola virus

Ebola virus. Coloured transmission electron micro- graph of a single Ebola virus, the cause of Ebola fever. It is one of the group of filoviruses, so- called for its thin and long shape. Here the viral filament is seen looping in on itself. A number of major outbreaks of this severe, frequently fatal viral haemorrhagic fever have occurred in equatorial Africa since 1976, one in Zaire in 1995. The virus appears similar to, but is antigenically distinct from the Marburg virus which causes green monkey disease. The illnesses from both Ebola and Marburg viruses are similar, with fever, skin rash, and haemorrhage. Death may be rapid. Magnification: x19, 000 at 6x7cm size. x66, 500 at 8x10". This is the "reston" strain of Ebola, from Philadelphia, USA

Caffeine crystals, SEM Featured Image

Caffeine crystals, SEM

Caffeine crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of anhydrous caffeine crystals (1, 3, 7-trimethylxanthine). They were produced by a process called sublimation. A liquid containing caffine, such as coffee, is frozen and heated to 238 degrees Celsius, causing the frozen liquid to vaporise without going through the liquid phase. The vapour is then condensed, which drives the water out and results in anhydrous crystals. Some of the crystals have symmetrically intergrown (upper centre, red and yellow). Caffine stimulates the central nervous system (CNS), increasing alertness and deferring fatigue. It occurs in coffee beans and tea leaves. Magnification: x400 at 10 centimetres high

Coloured TEM of a section through blood platelets

Active platelets. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through activated blood platelets. Platelet cells (thrombocytes) are formed in the bone marrow, and circulate in blood in large numbers. In an unactivated state they are round/oval, whereas activated platelets develop pseudopodia or extensions from the cell wall. Platelets contain cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria (green), endoplasmic reticulum and granules (dark blue). Platelets function in two ways: they plug defects in the walls of blood vessels, and are involved in clotting. They also release serotonin which constricts blood vessels.
