EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century, providing a glimpse into the lives of South American cannibals. The artwork, created by French explorer and writer Andre Thevet, showcases indigenous people from South America engaging in the gruesome act of dismembering and roasting their slain enemies. Extracted from his renowned book "Cosmographie universelle" this woodcut is part of chapter XV in book XXI. The detailed illustration depicts a chilling scene where men and women gather around a communal fire, cooking human limbs over it. With an axe in hand, a Brazilian man stands tall while others go about their butchering tasks. This thought-provoking image sheds light on the historical practices of cannibalism prevalent during that era. Through this monochrome artwork, we are transported to an anthropological exploration of South American culture during the Middle Ages. It serves as a reminder of our complex history and diverse cultural practices that have shaped societies throughout time. Todd-White Art Photography has skillfully captured this significant piece with great attention to detail and authenticity. As we contemplate this photograph print, we are compelled to reflect upon humanity's past actions and how they continue to shape our present understanding of different cultures across Latin America today.
