Proton collision C014 / 1802

Cut-away view of the ATLAS (a toroidal LHC apparatus) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland, showing particle tracks from a proton-proton collision. Before the collision the ions had been accelerated by the large hadron collider (LHC). The collision produced numerous hadrons (orange lines) and a W boson. The W boson was not seen, but was revealed through its decay particles; a muon (red line) and a muon-neutrino. The muon-neutrino has a neutral charge and so cannot be detected. The dark green rectangles are muon chambers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a cut-away view of the ATLAS detector at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland. The image captures the aftermath of a proton-proton collision that occurred within the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), one of the world's most powerful particle accelerators. The collision resulted in the creation of numerous hadrons, represented by vibrant orange lines traversing through space. Although invisible to the naked eye, an elusive W boson was also produced during this collision. While it remained unseen directly, its presence was unveiled through its decay particles - a muon and a muon-neutrino. A striking red line represents the trajectory of the muon as it travels away from the point of collision. The dark green rectangles scattered throughout are known as muon chambers, crucial components for detecting and measuring these subatomic particles with great precision. However, due to their neutral charge, muon-neutrinos cannot be detected despite playing an essential role in our understanding of fundamental particles and cosmology. This extraordinary photograph offers us a glimpse into groundbreaking research conducted at CERN's European particle physics laboratory. It highlights not only our relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries surrounding matter and structure but also emphasizes humanity's insatiable curiosity about our universe's building blocks.
