EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of an unprecedented accident that occurred at the station of Zollino in Apulia. The image, a colour lithograph by Achille Beltrame, showcases the chaos and destruction caused by an unknown seaplane that mysteriously appeared from the East. In a lightning-fast maneuver, the seaplane flew at low altitude, narrowly missing a locomotive but shattering its chimney. As it continued on its path, it even managed to break telegraph wires and lose one of its floats in the collision. Astonishingly, the aircraft regained altitude and disappeared into the horizon. The illustration was originally featured in Courier Sunday on April 28th, 1935. It depicts not only the dramatic collision between air and rail transport but also highlights how this extraordinary event left witnesses bewildered and amazed. Beltrame's artwork beautifully captures both the speed and power of these two modes of transportation colliding with each other. The shattered telegraph poles and twisted wires serve as reminders of just how intense this accident must have been. This print is a testament to human ingenuity as well as a reminder that accidents can happen when different forms of transport intersect unexpectedly. It serves as a striking visual representation of our ever-evolving world where trains meet airplanes in unforeseen circumstances.
