In this print titled "Returning from a baptism, a Romanian family passing by sled over a frozen river" we are transported to the icy landscapes of Romania. The image, captured in vibrant color litho by Achille Beltrame, showcases the perilous journey of a Romanian family as they make their way back home after attending a baptism. As they traverse the frozen river on their sleds, tragedy strikes when the ice beneath them suddenly collapses. In an act of desperation to save her newborn child, the mother throws him away from herself towards another approaching sled. However, this only leads to further fractures in the ice and both mother and child sink into the freezing waters. This heartbreaking scene serves as an illustration for Courier Sunday on February 18th, 1934. It highlights not only the dangers faced by families during winter but also emphasizes the lengths parents will go to protect their children. Beltrame's masterful depiction captures both the beauty and treacherous nature of nature's four elements: earth (the snowy hills), water (the frozen river), air (the falling snowflakes), and fire (symbolizing warmth amidst cold).
