Peral submarine. 19th-century artwork of the Spanish Peral electric submarine on the surface at docks before submergence. This was the worlds first submarine to be powered by electric batteries. It was designed by the Spanish engineer Isaac Peral (1851-1895). It was built at the Carraca shipyard, Cadiz, Spain, from October 1887, and launched on 8 September 1888. It was 22 metres long, had electric motors, two propellers, and a torpedo tube. Tests were successful, but the project ended in 1890. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Peral submarine, a groundbreaking invention that revolutionized naval technology in the late 19th century. Created by Spanish engineer Isaac Peral, this remarkable vessel was the world's first electric battery-powered submarine. The artwork showcases the submarine on the surface at docks before its submergence, providing a glimpse into its pioneering construction. Measuring an impressive 22 meters long and equipped with electric motors, two propellers, and a torpedo tube, this engineering marvel pushed boundaries in maritime exploration. The monochrome illustration beautifully depicts the intricate details of this early technological achievement. Built at the Carraca shipyard in Cadiz, Spain from October 1887 to September 1888, tests proved successful for Peral's creation. However, despite its promising potential as a military asset for underwater warfare, the project came to an end in 1890. The image transports us back to a time when inventors like Isaac Peral were pushing boundaries and shaping history through their ingenuity. This snapshot serves as a testament to human innovation and highlights how pioneers like Peral paved the way for future advancements in naval technology. Displayed within La Science Illustree magazine's fourth volume of 1889 – renowned for popularizing scientific knowledge – this artwork stands as an enduring tribute to both Spanish engineering prowess and international scientific curiosity during that era.
