HMS Ark Royal in Scotland
The British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal is escorted up Loch Long by a tugboat as it heads for the Glen Douglas facility in Scotland. The Ark Royal will take on stores there before heading off on a deployment which will take it to the Mediterranean and possibly onto the Gulf. * 16/1/03: Britain s most powerful warship was due to set sail from Scotland, having completed its final domestic preparations for a potential war in the Gulf. HMS Ark Royal was expected to leave the Glen Douglas armaments base on the banks of Loch Long, Argyll, bound for the Mediterranean where it will take part in exercises. The aircraft carrier will then head for the Gulf region should the US and Britain launch military action against Iraq.
Military - HMS Andromeda Launch - HM Dockyard, Portsmouth
HMS Andromeda, the Royal Navy's 18th Leander-class frigate, at her launch at HM Dockyard, Portsmouth. She was named by Mrs Gerald Reynold (on dais), wife of the Minister of Defence (administration). The Andromeda, which has a standard displacement of about 2, 000 tons, has an overall length of 372 feet and a beam of 43 feet. It will have a complement of 17 officers and 246 ratings. Her armament will consist of 4.5 inch guns in a twin mounting directed by a fully automatic radar, controlled fire control and gun direction system, a Seacat ship-to-air launcher and anti-submarine mortar. She will also carry a helicopter for anti-submarine use.

Advanced Test Reactor core
Nuclear reactor core of the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Lab (INEEL) at Idaho Falls, USA. This large reactor has been in use since 1967. It operates with a thermal power of 250, 000 kilowatts. The reactor is water-cooled and the blue glow results from Cerenkov radiation, emitted when energetic charged particles travel faster through the water than light. This reactor is used for research into the effects of radiation on materials, and for the production of rare and valuable medical and industrial isotopes.
