Moctezuma II, Aztec emperor C015 / 5791

Moctezuma II (c.1466-1520), Aztec emperor. Moctezuma was the ruler (tlatoani) of Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City), then the centre of the Aztec Empire (Triple Alliance). It was during his reign that Spanish explorer and conquistador Hernan Cortes (1485-1547) arrived with an army in August 1519. Moctezuma welcomed Cortes as a guest, but some months later was taken hostage in his own city and died in unclear circumstances. Cortes and his army fought their way out of the city, regrouped and completed their conquest. Artwork from History of the Conquest of Mexico (1847)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Moctezuma II, the esteemed Aztec emperor who reigned over Tenochtitlan during the height of the Aztec Empire. Moctezuma's rule coincided with a pivotal moment in history when Spanish explorer Hernan Cortes and his army arrived on Mexican shores in 1519. Initially welcoming Cortes as an honored guest, Moctezuma soon found himself held hostage within his own city under uncertain circumstances. Tragically, he met his demise while still captive. The artwork featured here is taken from "History of the Conquest of Mexico" (1847), offering a glimpse into this tumultuous period. The portrait depicts Moctezuma as a regal figure adorned with ornamental clothing and a majestic crown befitting his status as emperor. His expression hints at both strength and vulnerability, reflecting the complex nature of leadership during times of conquest. This image not only captures Moctezuma's physical appearance but also serves as a window into indigenous culture and religion prevalent in Mesoamerica during the 16th century. It symbolizes an era marked by clashes between different civilizations and their contrasting beliefs. As we contemplate this monochrome artwork, we are reminded of the profound impact that historical figures like Moctezuma had on shaping North American history. Their stories continue to resonate today, serving as reminders of our shared human experience across time and cultures.
