Kidney tubule, TEM

Kidney tubule. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a proximal convoluted tubule in the kidney. The proximal convoluted tubules function to reabsorb water, glucose and other small molecules from the filtrate, producing a concentrated urine. The tubules consist of a lumen (interior, white) lined with cuboidal epithelial cells (green). These cells are covered in many finger-like projections known as microvilli, which serve to increase the cells surface area for reabsorption. The cells nuclei (brown), which contain the cells genetic information, are also seen. The reabsorbed molecules move into the interstitial fluid of the kidney and are absorbed back into the blood. The liquid in the tubules passes to the bladder

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of a kidney tubule, captured using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The image reveals a section through a proximal convoluted tubule in the kidney, highlighting its essential role in reabsorbing water, glucose, and other small molecules from the filtrate to produce concentrated urine. The tubules are composed of cuboidal epithelial cells that line the interior or lumen. These cells are adorned with numerous microvilli – finger-like projections that dramatically increase their surface area for efficient reabsorption. The green coloration emphasizes these specialized structures. In this magnified image, we can also observe the brown nuclei within each cell. These nuclei contain vital genetic information necessary for cellular functions. As reabsorbed molecules move into the interstitial fluid of the kidney, they are eventually absorbed back into the bloodstream. The false-colored presentation adds an artistic touch to this scientific marvel while enhancing our understanding of renal histology and physiology. It offers insights into how our urinary system works at a microscopic level and underscores the complexity and beauty inherent in biological processes. This stunning photograph is part of Science Photo Library's collection on biology and anatomy subjects. Its detailed portrayal invites us to appreciate both the intricacies of our own bodies and the remarkable capabilities of scientific imaging techniques like TEM microscopy.
