The number of protons in a nucleus determines the element it belongs to, while the number of neutrons can vary within an element. It also contain electrons, which orbit around them in shells. Nuclear forces hold nuclei together, and these forces become stronger as more protons are added to the nucleus. Nuclear reactions involve changes to nuclei that can release energy or create new elements through fusion or fission processes.
