Ivan Beritashvili (1885-1974, centre), Soviet physiologist, instructing students who are studying the brain of a laboratory animal. This experiment is being carried out at the Georgian Research Institute for Physiology, Tbilisi, Georgia. Beritashvili founded physiology research in Georgia, and was a Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. His most important contribution to physiology was the discovery of the mediation of animal psychoneural behaviour by image-driven memory. Photographed in 1962
