Proton collision C014 / 1803

Particle tracks from a proton-proton collision seen by the ATLAS (a toroidal LHC apparatus) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. Before the collision the ions had been accelerated by the large hadron collider (LHC). The collision produced numerous hadrons (orange lines) and a W boson. The W boson was not seen, but was revealed through its decay particles; a muon (red line) and a muon-neutrino (dotted red line). The muon-neutrino has a neutral charge and so cannot be detected, but its predicted trajectory has been shown. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate traces left behind by a proton-proton collision, captured by the ATLAS detector at CERN. The image represents a significant moment in particle physics research, as it unveils the hidden world of subatomic particles and sheds light on the structure of matter. Prior to this collision, these ions were accelerated to high speeds within the powerful Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located near Geneva, Switzerland. The impact generated an array of hadrons, depicted as vibrant orange lines emanating from the collision point. Amongst these particles was a W boson, although it remains unseen in this particular photograph. However, through meticulous analysis and detection techniques employed at CERN's European particle physics laboratory, scientists were able to trace its existence indirectly. The decay products of the W boson - a muon represented by a striking red line and a muon-neutrino indicated by a dotted red line - provide evidence for its presence. It is worth noting that while we cannot directly detect the neutral-charged muon-neutrino itself due to its elusive nature, researchers have accurately predicted its trajectory based on theoretical models. This mesmerizing image not only highlights groundbreaking research but also emphasizes humanity's relentless pursuit of understanding fundamental particles and unraveling mysteries surrounding our universe's composition.
