Pasteur in his study, 19th century
Pasteur in his study. French microbiologist and chemist Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) found that fermentation is caused by micro-organisms, and also proposed the germ theory of disease. He developed a vaccine against rabies, which led to the founding of the Pasteur Institute in 1888. He discovered the anthrax bacterium and developed a vaccine against it. He also discovered that gentle heating of wine and beer preserves them from souring. Called pasteurisation, this is now widely used in the food industry. Artwork from the tenth volume (second period of 1892) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of renowned French microbiologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur, in his study during the 19th century. Sitting at his desk with an air of intellectual curiosity, Pasteur's pioneering contributions to science are beautifully depicted in this historical artwork. Known for his groundbreaking discoveries, Pasteur unraveled the mysteries behind fermentation and proposed the revolutionary germ theory of disease. His relentless pursuit led him to develop a vaccine against rabies, which ultimately led to the establishment of the prestigious Pasteur Institute in 1888. Additionally, he made significant strides in bacteriology by identifying the anthrax bacterium and creating a vaccine against it. The illustration also highlights one of Pasteur's most enduring legacies - pasteurisation. Through gentle heating techniques applied to wine and beer, he discovered a method that effectively preserved these beverages from souring. This innovation has since become widely adopted within the food industry. Featured as part of La Science Illustree's tenth volume from 1892, this mesmerizing artwork pays homage to Louis Pasteur's remarkable achievements as a scientist and medical pioneer. It serves as a powerful reminder of his lasting impact on microbiology and medicine while offering us a glimpse into his world within the comfort of his study.
