Lunokhod 1 lunar rover, artwork
Lunokhod 1 lunar rover, artwork. The Earth is at upper right. This lunar rover was the first of two unmanned moon vehicles landed by the USSR as part of the Lunokhod program. It was landed on the Moon on 17 November 1079 by the Luna 17 spacecraft. The rover was controlled and moved on the Moons surface by technicians on Earth. It collected readings of soil density and mechanical properties. Although it was only designed to last for 3 lunar days, it actually continued transmitting data until 14 September 1971, and the mission only officially ended on 4 October after 11 lunar days (322 Earth days)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the iconic Lunokhod 1 lunar rover, a pioneering machine that left an indelible mark on space exploration history. With Earth majestically positioned at the upper right, this print encapsulates the audacious spirit of early space missions. As part of the groundbreaking Lunokhod program, this unmanned moon vehicle was successfully landed on our celestial neighbor by the Luna 17 spacecraft on November 17th, 1970. Controlled remotely by skilled technicians back on Earth, it traversed the lunar surface with precision and purpose. Equipped with advanced technology, Lunokhod 1 diligently collected invaluable data regarding soil density and mechanical properties during its intended mission span of three lunar days. However, defying expectations and exhibiting remarkable resilience, it continued transmitting vital information until September 14th, 1971 - a testament to human ingenuity. With each passing day and every inch explored by this technological marvel, mankind's understanding of our nearest cosmic companion expanded exponentially. This historic mission officially concluded after eleven lunar days (equivalent to approximately 322 Earth days) on October 4th. The significance of Lunokhod 1 cannot be overstated; it symbolizes not only Soviet prowess in space exploration but also humanity's insatiable thirst for knowledge beyond our planet's boundaries. Its legacy lives on as a shining example of scientific research and discovery in one of humanity's greatest frontiers – outer space.
