This print captures the historic moment of the launch of an early rocket model by the American Rocket Society (ARS). Founded on April 4th, 1930, by a visionary group of science fiction writers including G. Edward Pendray, David Lasser, and Laurence Manning, ARS initially went by the name American Interplanetary Society. The society's members embarked on their own rocket experiments in New York and New Jersey, conducting pioneering work in testing liquid-fueled rockets' design requirements. Taken on September 4th, 1932, this sepia-toned image showcases a male scientist standing amidst a field as he tests this groundbreaking prototype. This private experiment marked a significant milestone that would eventually pave the way for the United States space program. The photograph not only highlights the technological advancements made during this era but also symbolizes human ingenuity and determination to explore beyond our earthly boundaries. With its monochrome aesthetic capturing every detail with precision and clarity, it serves as a testament to the dedication and passion of these early pioneers in rocketry. Detlev van Ravenswaay's expert lens immortalizes this pivotal moment in history when scientists pushed boundaries and defied gravity itself. As we gaze upon this snapshot from nearly nine decades ago, we are reminded of how far we have come in our pursuit of space exploration thanks to organizations like ARS - now known as American Rocket Society since April 6th, 1934.
