King Henry VIII of England
Henry VIII, King of England (1491-1547). Henry was the second Tudor monarch, ascending the throne on the death of his father Henry VII in 1509. His annulment of his first marriage (to Catherine of Aragon) and his marriage to Anne Boleyn precipitated a split with the Catholic Church. While believing in the central Catholic theology, Henry declared the Church of England to be free of papal authority, the monarch becoming supreme head of the Church of England, and dissolved the Catholic monasteries, their lands being taken by the crown. Henry was married six times - divorced twice, had two wives beheaded, lost one after childbirth and survived by the last. In youth sporting and intellectual, he ended his days bloated and vindictive. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic King Henry VIII of England, a figure who left an indelible mark on history. As the second Tudor monarch, he assumed the throne in 1509 following his father's passing. However, it was his tumultuous personal life and religious reforms that truly defined his reign. Henry's annulment of his first marriage to Catherine of Aragon and subsequent union with Anne Boleyn led to a profound rupture with the Catholic Church. Despite maintaining belief in Catholic theology, he boldly declared the Church of England free from papal authority and established himself as its supreme head. This pivotal decision also resulted in the dissolution of Catholic monasteries, with their lands seized by the crown. Married six times throughout his life, Henry experienced divorces, beheadings, tragic losses after childbirth, and ultimately survived only by his last wife. While once known for his athleticism and intellect during youth, he later succumbed to a bloated physique and vindictive demeanor. The expertly engraved black-and-white image captures both regality and intrigue surrounding this enigmatic ruler. It serves as a visual testament to one man's transformative impact on religion, politics, and society during a time when England underwent significant changes. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully preserved this historical artifact for all admirers of English history to appreciate its rich narrative within our collective past.
