Kinesin motor protein dimer C015 / 5920

Kinesin motor protein dimer, molecular model. Kinesin is a motor protein that moves along microtubule filaments in cells. It does so by forming a dimer, the heads of which walk along the microtubule. Here, the heads of the dimer are formed by two protein chains (orange and green, lower left; and pink and blue, upper right) that are attached by a neck region (lower right) where they coil together. This is not the alignment adopted when moving along a microtubule. The structure modelled here is based on studies of this kinesin in the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate molecular structure of the Kinesin motor protein dimer C015/5920. As a vital component in cell biology, Kinesin is responsible for facilitating movement along microtubule filaments within cells. The dimer formation consists of two protein chains, depicted in vibrant orange and green (lower left), as well as pink and blue (upper right). These chains are connected by a coiled neck region (lower right) which allows them to function together harmoniously. It's important to note that this particular configuration does not represent the alignment adopted during its movement along microtubules. This stunning illustration is based on thorough studies conducted on this specific kinesin found in brown rats (Rattus norvegicus). The image, set against a clean white background, beautifully captures the complexity and elegance of this macromolecule. With its alpha helices prominently displayed, it serves as an invaluable tool for researchers delving into molecular biology and structural biochemistry. Through proteomics research, scientists can gain deeper insights into how these proteins contribute to cell motility and overall biological processes. This artwork provides viewers with a cut-out representation of the kinesin motor protein's head and neck domain, allowing us to marvel at nature's ingenuity at such a microscopic level. Photographed by LAGUNA DESIGN/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this print exemplifies both scientific accuracy and artistic beauty while shedding light on one of nature's remarkable creations – the Kinesin motor protein dimer C015/5920.
