Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that occur within living organisms, and is a branch of science that combines biology and chemistry to understand how molecules interact with each other in order to create life. Biochemists use a variety of techniques, including spectroscopy, chromatography, and microscopy, to study the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), hormones and enzymes. They also investigate how these molecules interact with each other in metabolic pathways to produce energy for cells or regulate gene expression. By understanding these processes at a molecular level, biochemists can develop treatments for diseases such as cancer or diabetes. Additionally they can be used to design new drugs or improve existing ones.
