EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Elias Ashmole, a prominent English antiquary and collector. Born in 1617, Ashmole initially pursued a career in law while residing in London. However, during the tumultuous Civil War period (1642-1651), he sought refuge in Oxford where he delved into the realms of alchemy and astrology. Upon his return to London in 1649, Ashmole transformed his household into a hub of knowledge and learning. His association with the esteemed collector and gardener John Tradescant proved instrumental as Ashmole inherited an impressive assortment of plants, coins, minerals, and curiosities from him. Recognizing their historical significance and value for future generations to appreciate, Ashmole generously donated this remarkable collection to Oxford University in 1677. This act laid the foundation for England's first public museum - the renowned Ashmolean Museum. The accompanying engraving is derived from one of Ashmole's posthumous works titled "The Antiquities of Berkshire" published in 1719. It beautifully captures his likeness within an alcove setting adorned with various elements symbolizing his diverse interests such as geology, natural history, anthropology, astrology, alchemy, and more. Todd-White Art Photography has skillfully captured this historic moment through their lens; showcasing not only the man behind these achievements but also providing us with a glimpse into English culture during the late 17th century.
