A close-up of a three foot long Ichthyostega from the Late Devonian Period

A close-up of a three foot long Ichthyostega from the Late Devonian Period 365 million years ago in what is today the Canadian Arctic. Flanking the Ichthyostega are Rhacophyton ceratangium, ancient shrubs that are thought to be one of the earliest ferns. The reddish fruit-like nodules attached to the fronds on the right are sporangia, enclosures in which spores are formed. The large tree-like trunk on the far right is the base of a young Archaeopteris.
In the foreground are prehistoric arthropods, a millipede on the left and on the right cockroaches on trunk of a decaying Lycopsid. Arthropods had been walking the Earth for 40 million years before vertebrates like Ichthyostega began venturing ashore.
Ichthyostega was one of the earliest tetrapods, a descendent of lobe-finned fishes and ancestor of amphibians. Ichthyostega had lungs and seven-toed limbs that allowed it to move about the shallow waters and shores of swamps and floodplains. It was among the first terrestrial vertebrates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back 365 million years ago to the Late Devonian Period in what is now the Canadian Arctic. In this close-up shot, we are introduced to a magnificent three-foot long Ichthyostega, an ancient creature that marked one of the earliest tetrapods and bridged the gap between lobe-finned fishes and amphibians. Flanked by Rhacophyton ceratangium, some of the earliest ferns known to mankind, the Ichthyostega stands as a testament to evolution's remarkable journey. The reddish fruit-like nodules attached to the fern fronds on its right side are sporangia – enclosures where spores were formed. On the far right, we see a large tree-like trunk belonging to a young Archaeopteris. Its presence adds depth and context to this prehistoric scene. Meanwhile, in the foreground, prehistoric arthropods make their appearance - a millipede on one side and cockroaches crawling over decaying Lycopsid trunk on another. It is fascinating to note that these arthropods had already been roaming our planet for 40 million years before vertebrates like Ichthyostega began venturing onto land. This image serves as a reminder of Earth's rich history and how life has evolved over millions of years. Captured by Walter Myers from Stocktrek Images, this print offers us an incredible glimpse into our distant past while igniting our curiosity about life's origins and transformations throughout time.
