Physalis mottle virus capsid

Avian polyomavirus capsid, molecular model. This virus, one of a range named for their potential to cause multiple tumours, infects birds. Discovered in budgerigars in 1981, it is often fatal. In viruses, the capsid is the protein shell that encloses the genetic material. A capsid consists of subunits called capsomeres that self-assemble to form the shell seen here. Here, this shell, approximately spherical in shape, has icosahedral symmetry. One of the functions of the capsid is to aid the transmission of the viral genetic material into host cells

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of the Physalis mottle virus capsid, also known as Avian polyomavirus capsid. This molecular model represents a virus that belongs to a group notorious for their ability to induce multiple tumors in infected birds. Originally discovered in budgerigars back in 1981, this pathogen has proven to be highly fatal. The focal point of this image is the protein shell, known as the capsid, which envelops and protects the viral genetic material. Comprised of individual units called capsomeres, these subunits self-assemble to form the spherical shape seen here. The symmetry displayed by this icosahedral shell adds an element of visual beauty to its deadly nature. Beyond its structural role, the capsid plays a crucial function in facilitating the transmission of viral genetic material into host cells. Its significance lies not only within avian populations but also sheds light on broader aspects of virology and biology. This stunning artwork against a black background serves as a reminder of both the lethal potential and scientific intrigue surrounding viruses like Physalis mottle virus. It exemplifies how molecular models can provide valuable insights into understanding diseases caused by pathogens such as polyomaviruses.
