Herpes virus replicating

Herpes virus replicating, computer artwork.Viruses are only able to replicate in a host cell. The glycoprotein spikes in the virus envelope(green) enable it to fuse with the host cell'smembrane (upper right). The virus capsid (proteincoat, blue), which contains its DNA(deoxyribonucleic acid) genome (red), is releasedinto the cell's cytoplasm. The virus particletravels to the nucleus (pink), entering it througha nuclear pore, and uses the cell's machinery toreplicate its own DNA and produce and assemble newcapsid proteins. The daughter DNA enters the newcapsids and the particles leave the nucleus, againthrough a nuclear pore. Envelope proteins areadded to the capsid by Golgi bodies in thecytoplasm. The viruses then leave the cell, readyto infect another cell

Paramyxovirus particles, TEM

Sendai virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Sendai virus particles (virions, orange). The protein coat (capsid) of one of the particles has split, allowing its RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material (orange strips) to spill out. The Sendai virus is a paramyxovirus. Also known as parainfluenza virus type 1, it infects mice, rats, hamsters and guinea pigs. It is transmitted by direct contact and in the air, causing laboured breathing and a decrease in the number of offspring produced. The Sendai virus is also used as a cell-fusing agent in laboratories. Magnification unknown

Murine norovirus with antibody fragments

Murine norovirus (MNV) with antibody fragments, computer model. This image was created using molecular modelling software and data from cryo- electron microscopy. The image shows the outer protein shell of the virus (yellow, green), known as the capsid. It is covered with antibody fragments (light to dark blue) known as Fabs (antigen binding fragments). MNV belongs to the norovirus group of viruses, which are a major cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. MNV infects only mice. Cryo-electron microscopy images specimens at a temperature of minus 150 degrees Celsius. It fires beams of electrons at multiple angles creating slices of data that are reconstructed into 3-D models on computer
