Belyaev with his selectively bred foxes

Dmitri Konstantinovich Belyaev (1917-1985), Soviet zoologist, with his selectively bred foxes. Belyaev, a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, is famous for the breeding experiments he carried out in the 1950s with silver foxes (Vulpes vulpes). The selective breeding that produced tame foxes also destabilised the gene pool, leading to changes in fur colour. This finding was used to explain the same process in dogs. Belyaev was director of the Russian Institute of Cytology and Genetics from 1959 to 1985. Photographed in Novosibirsk, Russia, in 1984

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned Soviet zoologist, Dmitri Konstantinovich Belyaev, alongside his selectively bred foxes in Novosibirsk, Russia. Belyaev's groundbreaking breeding experiments with silver foxes in the 1950s not only resulted in tame and docile creatures but also brought about unexpected changes in their fur color due to destabilization of the gene pool. This significant finding later shed light on similar processes observed in dogs. As a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and director of the Russian Institute of Cytology and Genetics from 1959 until his passing in 1985, Belyaev made remarkable contributions to the field of biology. In this historical image captured in 1984, we witness him engaging with these domesticated foxes within an enclosure amidst snowy surroundings. Belyaev's expertise as a geneticist and biologist is evident as he strokes one of these fascinating creatures while wearing warm clothing to combat the cold climate. The photograph serves as a testament to his dedication towards understanding animal behavior through meticulous research and experimentation. Through this image provided by Science Photo Library, we are granted a glimpse into both scientific history and our evolving relationship with nature. It reminds us that even seemingly small discoveries can have far-reaching implications for our understanding of genetics and selective breeding techniques across various species.
