Emin Pasha (1840-1892), the German doctor, explorer, linguist and Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province had retreated to Wadelai, near Lake Albert, with 10, 000 followers during the Mahdi Rising of the mid-1880 s. Cut off from all communication Emin Pasha was considered lost, so the British government sent out a rescue party led by H.M. Stanley (1841-1904), which reached Emin Pasha at the end of 1888. Emin Pasha was reluctant to leave Wadelai, but Stanley persuaded him to otherwise and took him to Bagamoyo on the Indian Ocean

Stanley, who set out to rescue Emin Pasha, a German doctor and Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province.
Emin Pasha had retreated to Wadelai near Lake Albert with his followers during the Mahdi Rising, becoming cut off from all communication and considered lost. The British government sent out Stanley's party to find and bring him back safely.
After reaching Emin Pasha at the end of 1888, Stanley persuaded him to leave Wadelai and accompany them to Bagamoyo on the Indian Ocean. This historic event marked a significant moment in African exploration and colonial history.
