Nettle stinging hair, light micrograph

Nettle stinging hair. Polarised light micrograph of a stinging hair from a Roman nettle (Urtica pilulifera). This tapering needle-shaped cell consists of a round basal part embedded in a multi-cellular pedestal (turquoise-green). The stinging cell itself has a central vacuole that is blue at the base and red at the tip. The cell wall (yellow) is thick and glass-like (silicified), especially at the red end. The tip itself ends in a spherical seal. Magnification: x230 when printed at 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a nettle stinging hair, captured through a polarised light micrograph. The image depicts a tapering needle-shaped cell found in the Roman nettle (Urtica pilulifera), revealing its fascinating structure and composition. The stinging hair is comprised of multiple cells forming a pedestal, which appears turquoise-green against the contrasting background. At its core lies a central vacuole, exhibiting shades of blue at the base and transitioning to red at the tip. The cell wall surrounding this delicate structure is thick and glass-like, particularly evident in its silicified yellow hue. Notably, the tip of this stinging hair culminates in a spherical seal, adding to its remarkable design. When printed at 10 centimetres high with an impressive magnification of x230, every minute detail becomes apparent – from the brittle nature of these cellular components to their unique arrangement within the plant tissue. This visually stunning photograph not only highlights the beauty inherent in botanical structures but also serves as an invaluable resource for researchers studying plant biology and botany. Its scientific significance lies in providing insights into trichome morphology and function while offering viewers an opportunity to marvel at nature's intricacies up close.
