Tomato stem. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the stem of a tomato plant (Lycopersicon lycopersicum). The surface layer consists of epidermal cells that have thickened outer walls and secrete a waxy coating, or cuticle, which prevents water loss. Gases are exchanged through openings, or stomata, in the epidermal layer (raised openings, lower left corner for example). The glandular hairs, or trichomes, (vertical spines) bear groups of cells (brown spheres) that secrete oils which are irritating to predatory insects. Magnification: x157 at 6x7cm size

Potato leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a transverse section of a potato leaf (Solanum tuberosum). The upper and lower surfaces of the leaf are covered in a single layer of closely packed cells called the epidermis. Below the upper epidermis is a layer of palisade parenchyma cells containing many chloroplasts. Beneath this layer is the spongy mesophyll which has large intracellular spaces for gaseous exchange. At the bottom is the lower epidermis, a single layer of closely packed cells where the stomata control gas exchange within the spongy mesophyll. Magnification x1260 (x262 at 10cm wide)

Rose sepal hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a sepal in a Garden Rose flower Rosa sp., showing hairs. Two types of hairs (trichomes) are visible projecting from the epidermal surface of the sepal. Numerous simple hairs are seen, unbranched and unicellular. A pair of larger, erect, multicellular hairs are visible with bulbous tips. These larger hairs are associated with secreting protective chemicals against pest attack, particularly when the plant is young. The sepals (calyx) form the tough outer whorl of the flower, surrounding the more delicate petals. They enclose and protect the flower when in bud.
