EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a member of Sir Henry Morton Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition being carried by hammock through the dense Central African jungle in 1888. At the time, Emin Pasha, a German doctor, explorer, linguist, and Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province, had retreated to Wadelai, near Lake Albert, with his 10,000 followers during the Mahdist Rising. Cut off from all communication, Emin Pasha was considered lost, and the British government sent out a rescue party led by the renowned explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley. Stanley and his team faced numerous challenges during their mission, including treacherous terrain, disease, and hostile locals. In this image, one of Stanley's men is being carried by his comrades in a hammock, likely as a means of traversing difficult terrain or to rest during the long journey. The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, which took place between 1887 and 1889, is an important chapter in the history of Central Africa and the scramble for Africa. Emin Pasha, a man of many talents, had been appointed Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province by the Khedive of Egypt in 1879 but was forced to flee when the Mahdist forces, led by the Mahdi, overthrew the Egyptian administration. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the hardships endured by the members of the relief expedition as they sought to bring aid to a man who had once been a colonial administrator but was now a man in need of rescue.
